The EWG task force chose the word connected rather than community because it better describes what today’s elders seek. A sense of isolation stemming from geographical distance from family and friends or loss of loved ones can leave elders feeling lonely. They desire to connect with others in ways that are wholesome and safe and in places where they can share their stories and sense that they belong. Parker J. Palmer, the author of A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life, describes such a place as “a circle of trust that creates a space between people that is hospitable to the soul.”* Hospitality, confidentiality, belonging, caring, empathy, trust, and compassion are hallmarks of our desire to serve participants in the Eldering with GRACE Project.
